The birth of independent India and Sri Aurobindo's birthday is on the same day; so is the birthday of Sri Aurobindo Pathamandir in Kolkata. Pathamandir was inaugurated on the 15th of August 1941. The organization was established with the approval and blessings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother and its goal is to disseminate the aims and ideals of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. It is the first public organization of its kind outside Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Puducherry.
A few hours before boarding the ship to Pondicherry, Sri Aurobindo came near the vicinity of this house. Pathamandir was formed at that very house. For over eighty years, Sri Aurobindo Pathamandir has continued its journey towards the service of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother.
To commemorate the 75th year of birthday Pathamandir prayed to the Divine Mother and was blessed with the sacred Relic of Sri Aurobindo received from Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Puducherry. The sacred Relic of the Mother is also here in Pathamandir.
Here the devotees have ample opportunity for individual and collective meditation in its salience and spacious hall along with an exclusive library. It is entirely devoted to the study and practice of the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. From the very beginning, the library has been an integral part of Sri Aurobindo Pathamandir. The name "Pathamanadir" says it all. It is rightly a medium of “Gyanayoga”
